We develop an environmental-economic model in which energy consumption produces pollutant emissions that negatively affect productivity. We find that an energy efficiency improvement provokes the “rebound effect” but also increases energy consumption and pollutant emissions. By contrast, a technological improvement in emissions leads to a rise in energy consumption but a reduction in emissions.
